I read an interesting post by leading IT / web entrepreneur Justin Hartman.

After they had surveyed over 1000 SA bloggers they discovered that:

88.4% of SA bloggers make R0 from their blogging activities and of those who do try and monetise their blogs, 58.8% earned between R1 and R200 and another 17.5% made between R201 and R500…

For all the SA bloggers out there, that’s a pretty small return.

I’m not going to touch on advertising methods etc, because I think that is something that Justins post and AdGator initiative will develop.

I want to focus on the fact that 88% of SA bloggers make absolutely nothing from their efforts. I read a stat recently that said something like 40% of South African consumers were in some level of financial distress (Were more than two months behind on a credit payment of some description or another)…

Now - using basic arithmetic, I assume that at least SOME of those 40% include SOME of the 88% of bloggers who are making zilch from their blogging efforts. Seems silly to me.

Blogging for me brings in an extra R1500 - R2000 a month (passive earnings) plus the paid blogging for other sites brings in another R4000 - not huge money but a handy few bucks!

The fact that a large portion of the R1500 a month comes in the form of ‘hard currency’ US dollars is also a pretty nifty hedge against a weaker SA Rand.

I find it a little mind boggling that there are so many people who are finding the time to blog, but at the same time are struggling financially. A slight change in the perception and the decision to look at ways to monetise your site can go a small way to improving your financial position…

You’ve just gotta be a little entrepreneurial about it…
